Line Krom is a German artist and cultural anthropologist, who explores the cultural richness of dust collected from museums, archives, mines, fields and other sites of social significance. Krom has transformed this often-overlooked material into performances, paintings, digital objects, and installations. Dust serves as both a metaphorical and material substrate in her practice for investigating themes of time, memory, environmental justice, and cultural heritage.
Krom is currently using agricultural dust in Germany as a medium to create landscape portraits. This work harnesses the potential of dust to echo broader social, economic and environmental concerns. Krom explores how exposure to dust can impact human health and well-being,
Krom’s engagement with dust is symbolic. The propensity of dust to multiply without external intervention serves as a powerful metaphor for economic conjuration and the constraints of value creation.
Her approach includes collaborating with Non-human partners, especially plants that are able to extract metals from human-generated dust and waste that she mixes into soil. This opens up new avenues for artistic exploration and ecological consciousness, inviting viewers to reflect on the dynamic interplay between creativity, economics, and sustainability.
Krom has been a guest artist exploring the implications of dust globally, with institutions such as the National Centre for Natural Sciences Bangalore, Kommunal Kunst og Teknik in Copenhagen, hackteria|Open Source Biological Art in Zurich, and received the support of Namdeb Diamond Corporation, StArt Art Gallery and OMDis Town Transform Agency to explore Dimond dust in the Namib Desert in Namibia. These opportunities have further enriched her exploration of materials and ideas.
Krom holds degrees in cultural anthropology and art education (Magistra Artium) from Frankfurt, and fine arts (M.A.) from Berlin and London. Her work has been exhibited internationally at prestigious venues, including Jerwood Space London (GB), Namibian Arts Association (NA), and CCA Kitakyushu (JP). Notable recent solo exhibitions include „Hortus Pecuniae – Garden of Money“ at Kunstturm Mücke (2022), „Numbers Rule“ at Frauen Museum Wiesbaden (2020), and „Trim the Fat!“ at Neuer Kunstverein Gießen (2020).
